I didnt know what else to call this thread but here goes my problem

I have a large brick back on my fireplace but it sticks out off the wall about an inch. When the house was built 37 years ago they put mortar in to take up the gap. I dont think the fireplace has moved because the gap is consitent all the way down. The problem is the mortar is cracking and breaking up. I believe it has just dried out completely and gotten brittle from the heat.

Can I just take an air chisel and bust it out then replace with stiffly mixed mortar?

What is the easiest tecnique for this?

Thanks
