I am tunning up a 3wheeler for a buddy and i was wondering what would make it backfire when you let off the throttle when you are driving it?Would it be a fuel problem? Where should I start?

Well, I was going to move this to the ATV forum, but I see you already have it there as well, lol. :)
A fuel mixture problem could cause this...probably a little too rich. Is the spark plug overly sooty? Retarded timing, bad or misadjusted points (if equipped) could also cause this. Check back for other advice. ATV engines aren't my specialty.

First Post-what a great site....
Anyway, I have an '82 185s atc and I had that problem crop up too. You've probably already checked this , but is there a air gap where the muffler goes into the cylinder? I recently took the muffler off and when i put it back on it wasn't quite sitting in there right. When I would let off the throttle it would backfire out of there. Reset the muffler, got some hi-heat silicone and she runs tip-top now...Hope this helps.
