Why do some people not reccomend venting through a soffit?

Sharfman,
Usually when people are suggested to run venting to the soffit, some think that you should just run the vent INTO THE SOFFIT AREA ONLY and let the sofft vents take care of the excess humidity.
The issue is centered around damage to soffit and adjoining wood materials. I have attached a link showing what should be done when it comes to bathroom exhaust venting;

Hope this helps!
