Why do you need to hang the ceiling drywall perpendicular to the joists?

1 reason is because it adds strength. a better reason is because you are going to find its a lot easier to trim a 4' unfinished edge than it is to trim an 8 or 12' finished edge when things don't quite fit. and if your job is big enough i guarantee you that will happen. also stagger the butt joints.
