 Question: To antique a sofa table, wood with light coat of varnish, can I sand lightly, apply Kilz & then apply my light coat of paint? I want to stencil gold motif on top of paint. Also should I use water based paint then finish with two? coats of polyurithane? Thanks much bowen869

Your methodology is fine until you get to the polyurethane. In a word - DON'T.

Solvent based poly has an amber cast and will alter the color you've applied with the paint. It's also highly doubtful the poly will even adhere to the paint.

If you use a good exterior semigloss latex house paint, the surface should be durable enough for ordinary wear and tear with no further finish work needed.

If you feel further protection is necessary (for the gold applique) I'd suggest Minwax Polycrylic. It will adhere to paint, and is water clear (no amber color).
