I will soon have my kitchen remodeled.
I will have granite countertops with a tile backsplash.
I currently have plaster walls with a formica backsplash glued to the wall. My home was built in the 70's and my bathroom tile was glued to plastered wall. After many years the tile fell off the wall because there was no wonderboard. I would like to know how my kitchen wall should be prepared for the tile. Do I need wonderboard? Should the formica be removed?

Use 1/4" concrete underlayment, for moisture and mold control, not to mention, making it a stiffer surface.
Custom Building products has a wall(& floor they say) mastic, that is as good as thinset! It is called OMNI-Grip. It is in a yellow pail. Mastics are great for back splashes, and they could go right over the sheetrock, since it isn't a real humid area, like a bathroom is once or twice a day.
If they use good old thinset mortar, it will be just as good, if not a tad better.
