Could anyone tell me where I can find some information, possibly with illustrations, on how you can manually sharpen circular saw blades. 20 years ago I use to shall we say touch them up. I have a good assortment of files and a circular blade vise but forget which teeth get bevels and which don't. I also have a tooth setting device. Thanks!

Hello: RDOC

Not too sure if sharpening circular blades can be successfully accomplished by hand filing. The most likely problems would be attempting to maintain a perfect circumference and the correct angles on the cutting edges.

My Grandfather hand-sharpened large diameter heavy kerf circular saw blades for millwork and furniture shops. There are three keys to doing it right; 1) the right vise, one that allows you you easily rotate, pin, and lock the blade, (lock it rock solid), 2) the right files, and 3) p-a-t-i-e-n-c-e! It takes a lot of time. Accurate circumfrence is really a non-issue, the blade will still cut and run true. Most good municipal libraries still carry (or maybe they can borrow from other libraries) the old handyman books and trade encyclopedias published in the 1920s & 30s by AUDELL'S. Audell's was great for illustrations! The Audell's wood working set has a-z for saw sharpening of every kind. I've seen the Audell's books offered on used book web sites.
