Is it OK to install ceramic tile over vinyl flooring? I have heard that this is OK as long as the vinyl is de-glossed. Has anyone out there done this successfully or is it really not advisable? HELP!

Yes, you can install ceramic and porcelain tile over vinyl and linoleoum (sp?)
What you need to do is (1) use a good cleaner or cleaner/stripper to thoroughly clean the floor that you intend to tile over---you can usually find a good cleaner at a tile store, or one of the big wharehouse stores. (2) you need to use an acrylic modified thinset mortar to install your tile. You can buy a regular floor and wall grade thinset and modify it with acrylic, but it is easier and cheaper for the do it yourselfer to buy pre-modified thinset.

Just remember your tile installation is only as good as the floor you set it on. ..sure modified thin set will stick to it, but are you sure the vinyl is stuck to the floor? Have you tried pulling up a peice to find out? and if it's cushion vinyl(can you dent it with your finger nail?) it has to be removed...and I hope we are talking about vinyl over concrete , if not, you have other things to think about , such as joist size and spacing and the thickness of the subfloor.:confused:

adanac is right! Never tile over vinyl that has been spot glued or in any other way improperly installed.
Also, if you are on a wood sub-floor, you should be installing a backerboard subfloor---thinset to the wood subfloor, screwed or nailed to the wood subfloor.
