Hello,

We have a 1989 Tappen Gas Self-cleaning oven. When starting the oven the burner does not light at all. There is a strong gas smell. The broiler does not light either.

Any ideas on what is the problem?

Diana

If it is an electronic ignition model that uses a glow coil to light the gas in the oven, it is common for these ignitors to be the proper resistance to open the gas valve but not hot enough to ignite the gas. This often causes delayed oven ignition (and a little explosion when finally lit) but can prevent ignition altogether. And yes, an oven ignitor can glow and still be defective.

If you have an Adobe Acrobat browser plugin, you can read how that system is suppose to operate at the following link:

Another possibility is plugged burner jets closest to the oven ignitor(s).

If your oven uses a spark ignition system, there are other observations that will need to be taken. Please let us know.
