my whirlpool supreme gas dryer will not run. for a couple of weeks before, the belt was making a squell noise. then last weekend it was running and it quite in the middle of the cycle. i thought it was done, checked the clothes (still wet), reset the cyle and pushed button. it only made a buzzer noise. it would not run. so i took the bottom off. belt is very thin but doesnt seem to be broke. i am trying to determine what is wrong.
so what do you think????

Hi,

A broken belt would stop the drum from turning and the motor would make a slight hummmm when running as it is not working hard...if your dryer motor is simply buzzzzzzzzing and no go, bad motor is very possible, something jamming the drum/motor from turning like a drum support wheel or something caught in the fan blower.
Common noise trouble makers:
- drum supports
- idler pulley
- belt
- motor

FWIW. Belts on washer and dryers don't usually squeal. It was likely caused by something else.

I do agree with Jeff though that if the motor is humming but not running, it is very likely defective and needs to be replaced (fairly common). While there you might as well replace the drum rollers and idler pulley as they frequently wear may likely be the source of the squealing sound you heard (if it wasn't the motor, as that would be rare).

ok an update. right now the dryer works for awhile then when it gets warm it stops running. i felt the shaft on the motor and it was very hot. when the dryer completely cools off it will run again. if you keep hitting the button, eventually the buzzing will quit working. it will run for about 30 minutes then quits. is the drum suppose to be free turning. i cannot budge it.

Hi,

**is the drum suppose to be free turning. i cannot budge it.**

The drum should turn...not easy, and will give a little resistance but the drum should turn.
Sounds like the motor is shutting off on it's built in safety as this will need cooling down time and the motor can make a squeek noise. Drum supports binding and holdign back the motor and making it overheat is another possibility. Try *carefully* to turn the motor shaft when the dryer heats up and quits on you.
Any buzz, growl when the dryer starts up?

yes there is slight buzz when the dryer does start, but its not noticeable when it starts. only when it quits running. and i did try to turn the axle on the motor when it was hot. would not move, neither would the drum.
you think i should tear it down and make sure all parts are moveable?

Hi,

**you think i should tear it down and make sure all parts are moveable?**

To eliminate them...yes, that would be a good idea.

Two common WLP styles.
