Hi All,

This is my first post. I just found this site and it sure looks helpful.
Especially since my wife and I are in contract on our first house.

Anyway, I have a few questions about window sizes.
I cant decide on the right size.

Currently, the house has 45"w X 25"h casement slider windows on the main floor. I am looking to replace them with vinyl double-hungs with 6 over 6 grids inbetween the glass.
My house interior will be totally gutted after our closing, so relocating the window openings and re-sizing will be easy.

My interior walls are all 8' high. Because of exterior soffets, the top of my widows must all start atleast 12" down from the ceiling.

Also, chair-rail moulding and wainscoating (sp?) are future possiblities in some rooms.
So i'm wondering will the window look strange if the sill is below the chair-rail which would be around 30" high ?

What would be the best size double-hung to go with ?

Keep in mind that we will be going for a country/colonial look.
Also, this is a Levitt Ranch style house in Levittown NY.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions !

Your terms for your current windows are a little off.....a casement is a window that the sash pivots on the top and bottom corner, and the sash swings either inward or outward. A slider is one in which the the sash slides left-right, like a sliding door. Two different animals....

As to size, it's really up to you....If rough openings are no problem, you can go with about any new manufacturer. Personally, I like a wood frame window with vinyl or aluminum cladding on the outside for the best of all worlds. A "traditional" double hung probably looks best if the height is about half again as high as wide.......like a 32 wide by 54 high....but really, it's what YOU want to see....

As to chair rail, I've seen plenty of it run into the casing on the sides of the window and the sill down lower.....don't see anything wrong with that....

Thanks for the reply Andy.
