I want to paint a rainbow in 5 pastel colors (pink, purple, yellow, blue and green) in my daughter's bedroom. I want to start on one wall then have the arch of the rainbow go up on the ceiling, move across a corner then come down on an ajoining wall. This raises many questions for me, like how to get a line to keep perspective when I cross onto the ceiling and back over onto the other wall. I also have questions about the actual paint medium. I bought an eggshell finish latex, but I want the rainbow to be kind of transparent (over the white wall) like a real rainbow would be. I bought some glaze to experiment with, but haven't done so yet. Also, how do I transition between colors so that I don't just have a straight line? Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks to anyone who may take time to ponder my quandry! :)

Is the center going to be the corner, or just a small portion of the rainbow going to cross the corner? If the later here's what I would do. Mark the center of the rainbow, tap in a nail, attach a string long enough to reach the ceiling and tie a pencil on the other end. (Kind of a flimsy protractor) Outline the rainbow on the main wall, shortening the string for each pass. Move nail to corner and start the process over, only not to the ceiling, just to the outline of each part of the rainbow. Try to use stretch resistant string, no nylon, kite string comes to mind.
As far as the colors, I am by now means an artists, but I would use a semi-transparent paint (or water colors) and dilute the paint at the edges so the colors kind of bleed into each other. I would practice on a piece of sheetrock, at $5 per sheet would give you a better idea then practicing on wood or paper.
hope this helps.

One other idea just popped up. If you have access to a projector draw the rainbow on projector film and then trace the image on the wall, will be able to adjust the size and possition very easily. Ok, you wouldn't draw on the film, but paper and then copy it to film using a copier (xerox).
