My drywall is sanded and ready to go. Or is it? What should I do before I paint it? Does it need a primere??

yes u need a primer/sealer
the paint will fail down the road if you skip this step
latex is fine-its also lots cheaper than an extra coat of paint

Be sure and get sander/primer/sealer that is recommended by the paint manufacturer of the paint that you're using. It will bond much better.
For instance, if you're using Benjamin Moore latex paint, use Benjamin Moore SPS.
Good luck!

When I did new sheetrocking I got 2 gallons of primer made for bare sheetrock like you have. Its a bunch cheaper than stuff like benjamin moore and looks great when painted over with an eggshell latex. I got it at a local lumber yard. Good luck. Peace: e3 - spamman

I primed my walls with New Construction Primer that I bought at Lowe's. It is a latex primer. I painted over this with a Satin paint and my walls turned out great.

Is everyone painting right on the primer that is directly over the drywall, or is there a texturing that is being applied in the process?

Brazen: I sheetrock, prime, paint. No texture. I am not partial to textured surfaces. Peace: e3 - spamman

I painted over the primer without any problems. It is important that you prime new drywall. If you do not prime first, the seams will soak up the paint and it will not look uniformed.

Thanks for the feedback guys. I wasnt too partial to texturing either, I like the look of smooth walls, especially when painted with colors other than white. But didnt know that people paint right on the drywall (primered). Im going to give it a shot!

Whats the normal "rule of thumb" for number of coats of primer? Until you dont see the joint compound show through?

thanks again. chris

Chris,

I used one coat of primer and two coats of paint. I do not see any seams. If you are painting your walls white you may be able to get by with one coat of each.

Others may have more to say, but this is what worked for me and my walls look great.
