We have a bi-level home. The top half of the house is covered in vinyl. The bottom half of the back and 2 sides is cinder block/concrete. The old owners painted it before we moved in, with interior paint  (idiots). Now the paint is all chipped and peeling. I have scraped most of it off, and would like to use a pressure washer to take the rest of it off, but with the drought here in PA, I can't do that right now.

My questions:
Would it be OK to just paint over the paint that's left on the wall?

How difficult is it to hang vinyl siding? Over concrete? What all is involved in hanging siding?

Should I just paint it or put siding over it?

Thanks!

mswift,

First, it is not a good idea to paint over any existing paint since it may start to bubble or peel from the brick surface. Rule of thumb...Bad substrate and everything that could go wrong will!

Your second question, paint or side? That's an issue for you and your pocket book. Painting is easier and cheaper...BUT you'll have to keep doing it.

Siding is the best maintenance free idea but the cost and time to install. Normally, furring strips have to be installed - usually with a Hilti ramset. One important issue is the areas around doors, windows which will have to be finished out. The new siding on top of the furring strips will protrude out beyond your existing mouldings. Review your existing conditions and if needed, contact a siding company to install unless you want to tackle it.

The choice is your's...Good Luck!
