I want to paint the wallboard that is under my paneling. When I went to take the paneling off, I discovered that the wallboard underneath is black in color, not moldy or stained. Is this real wallboard and can it be painted. The house was built in 1978?

brokeit,

This may be wallboard that has had moisture and it has turned colors. It would be wise to remove it and install new. With concerns of mold and the like, you never really know what is behind it and that could be a problem. Better being safe than sorry. Bear in mind that Oil Base primers will not stop anything from growing behind it!

Good Luck!
