How do I remove the black foam material, from a protective table cover, that deteriorated onto a fine finished cherry dining room table. I rubbed most of the bulky, easy to get off, stuff off with my fingers. Then I tried small areas with Lemon Oil. That worked ok for small areas but most of the table is still covered with this black foam material, originally intended to protect the table!

Paint thinner combined with 0000 steel wool may remove a large part of it, but there's a better than even chance part of it will have to be sanded out and the top repolished (not necessasarily refinished).

If the sanding is needed, use 600 grit wet/dry paper, lubricated with water and backed with a sanding block. Use 0000 steel wool to reduce the sanding abrasion marks, and Turtle Wax Polishing Compound and Scratch Remover to restore the sheen
