I have a plaster wall that has some cracks and moisture damage. What is the best way to repair the wall? Can I just use spackle to fill in the cracks and chips?

What you need to do is carefully break away the plaster so that all of the damaged area is gone. Cut a piece of drywall to fill in the space, and secure it with screws to the wall. Use fiber-tape to cover over the area between the plaster and the drywall patch. Use drywall mud to cover over, and sand it smooth. Will probably take at least two coats.

Another trick to repair cracks and do seams in plaster walls is to use 6"-8" wide strips of black plastic screen "wire", and mud it over the cracks just like you would drywall tape.
)This is used by a 40-year pro painter friend of mine. Works like a charm.)
Good Luck!
