I recently had the white vinyl upholstery in my boat stained by tar which was on the bottom of my son's shoes. The black stain came off immediately but it left a yellow stain behind.

Does anyone have any suggestions for removing the yellow stains?

The yellow stains may well be permanent due to a chemical reaction with the tar.
