I know this has been discussed, but I am posting because I think my oven is different from the other posts. It's a Roper m/n 1336W26, s/n 6Y22997 (pre-Whirlpool Roper). I think the other posters had more modern ranges than this one ...

We are running on natural gas, and nothing has changed in the home to precipitate oven troubles. My problem is similar to other posts: the oven pilot is lit, but the oven won't heat up. We *don't* smell gas. The surface burners work. (Well, one of them requires a match to light, but it's been that way for a long time...)

The only info I've gotten from manuals, etc., are some rough drawings showing air shutter and pilot adjustments. Your other posters mention a glow bar, which this oven does not use (as far as I can tell.)

Could you please explain how my system works, and how to troubleshoot?

Thank you. This is a great web site!

Hello: beebelo

If your oven uses a constant always on pilot, the element the pilot is heating or heats when the thermostat is turned on, is defective, that element must be replaced.

A dirty pilot could also be all or part of the problem. However, your oven isn't any different than any others. Every type has been covered in this forum many times.

Not currently on my usuall computer so I do not have access to more possible problems and solutions in prior replies I posted. I will attempt to provide you with more details when on land.

In the mean time, if you'll search the prior postings on the topic of ovens which do not work and or oven burners which do not lite, the solutions I offered will be a guide to use to resolve the oven problem your having.

On a constant pilot ignition oven (like you described) what should happen is when the thermostat is turned on, the pilot flame should extend (get bigger). This bigger pilot flame heats the capillary tube of the oven safety valve which allows the safety valve to open and send gas to the oven burner.

If the pilot is NOT extending when the thermostat is turned on, the thermostat could be defective or the pilot tubing partially plugged.

If the pilot flame IS extending, the pilot itself could be partially plugged causing not enough heat to get to the oven safety valve's capillary sensor, the capillary could be dirty (like covered in grease) or the safety valve defective and need to be replaced. IMO chances are the latter is the case if the pilot is extending but no gas getting to the oven burner.

BTW. Ignitors are only used on electronic ignition models.

Just an fyi for other readers:

Tom mentioned in another post to look in the "archives", which I was unable to locate before I posted. However, I just discovered the way to find old stuff is to do a search. DOHHHHH!!! I searched on "oven" and "burner" and found tons of posts similar to mine. Also, I found a couple of "FYI" sheets on oven safety elements and cleaning pilots.
