I had the breaker tripping on my central a/c unit. didn't find any burnt wires and after checking all of them, i found that one of the three on the compressor was shorting to ground. took it off and checked the connection. still shorting to ground so i guess i'm gonna look for a new compressor.
thanks for you help.

Youneed to remove all 3 wires from the compressor terminals and check the copressor terminals to ground independently. [don't forget to make a sketch of which wire goes to which terminal] You see, you could simply have a grounded capacitor and, if you leave any wires on the compressor terminals, you could be reading thru a backfeed circuit. Test the compressor all by itself before condeming it. It's the most expensive part.

Yeah, I took all the wires off the compressor. From each terminal to ground I'm getting continuity. So I'm pretty sure the compressor is bad. I even have all the wires off the capacitor so theres no connection to it at all. Oh well, guess i cant complain, the unit has given me 13 years of trouble free service.
