I have a fireplace with an insert. There is a gap along the top and sides where the insert sits in the original fireplace. I want to tile over this gap. My question is: What should I use for a backer for the tiles? This area has at least the potential of getting hot due to the way the insert vents into the flue.

You can use a fire resistant concrete board to case the fireplace opening and use as underlayment for tile installation.
