In the sunbelt where winter temperatures rarely drop under 20 deg F. , a standard heat pump will operate as cheaply as oil. In more severe winters, a ground source or geo-thermal heat pump is very economical to run. (But expensive to buy.)
I would not recommend a homeowner to install a furnace of any type. If you choose to, get a permit and have your work inspected for code and safety compliance. The equipment comes with an installation manual to study and follow. Get one and read it carefully before you decide on doing it.
