 i'm trying to install a new tub spout & shower combo. right now, the h20 is off, the spout is off, and the shower knob & escutcheon are still hanging on. i'm able to look behind the wall at the plumbing. however, i can not figgure out how to gingerly take of the fixture. also, i'm not sure what direction to unscrew or what tool is safe enough to use while disassembling the shower stem. my main concern is removing and replacing the cartridge. i don't want to cause any damage to my plumbing. can you give detailed instructions and tips? thanks!

Tumbalina,
Your questions is confusing, first it is installing a new tub spout and shower combo then it is a cartridge os let's do the cartridge.
First we have to establish what brand of faucet assembly you have, so since we don't know that I have attached a step by step list that should help you out. (What is listed is for a Moen) Regardless of the brand, remeber how you took it apart. (Instructions that are with replacement cartridges are usually easy to follow)
YOU ALREADY HAVE THE WATER SHUT OFF
Remove cap or insert button to expose screw on the handle.
Remove the screw (turning it to the left-LOOSENS, to the right - TIGHTENS and pull off handle assembly. Remove retainer clip (copper horseshoe shaped clip) and pull out cartridge with channel locks, pliers, or cartridge puller.
Insert new cartridge with hole on the stem facing the 6 o'clock position, or down in a tub/shower.
Reinsert retainer clip and screw in handle assembly, followed by the cap or insert button. Turn water back on.
Hope this helps you out.

:o my goodness it's been quite a day running around asking for help, etc. so, i've figgured out that my plumbing is fine and i don't want to replace the cartridge because i'll break the tile. so, i've opted for standard fixtures and have major inconviences with returns and pre-opened packages without minor parts... major headache. now that i know how to install all the tub and shower fixtures, i still have a leak from the tub pipe. it runs a lot less now, so i think it has something to do with the fixture that i was unable to find a decent replacement for,(i'll deal with that tomorrow). i have now re-installed my old handle/fixture. i guess it must be loose, because when in the off position the tub still leaks, (not to do with the spout fixture or diverter). if i turn the single knob to the left, the water leaks less. for now it is still running that way. now i'm back right where i began with the same problem leak. maybe i need specific suggestions for adjusting the single knob fixture. i've tried to screw it in as tight as possible. however, the good news is i'm positive i will pull of replacing my sink fixure just fine... piece of cake! :p :D sorry i've been so obscure. i was like a chicken with it's head cut off. i feel better about my own plumbing repairs. can you help me? :o  thanks for your time and consideration!
