I am removing wallpaper which has been applied directly to my drywall. Large holes have resulted where the top layers of drywall have been removed and the wall has only exposed brown paper. Can I fix this or do I need to hang new drywall???

Apply premixed plaster or joint compound. Let dry and sand.
