My neighbor here in Essex County paid $12,000 for a mid-range upgrade on a smaller room. $5,000 is the base price for gutting and minor electrical/plumbing upgrades. Sink, shower, toilet, fixtures, cabinets, lights, tiles, painting, etc. are extra. This is based on the bids my neighbor received, including one bidder who stated that the $5,000 base cost is area-wide. This was also the base price listed by several contractors at a home show in central NJ.
