I currently have a dark wooded baby crib. I would like to paint this white. I have never messed around with refinishing furniture. What are the steps I need to take and what is the safest thing for my baby and myself since I'm still expecting?

Three steps:
Sand
Prime
Paint
Sand enough to rough up the surface - it's not necessary (or desirable) to completely remove the current finish.
Prime. I use either BIN or KILZ for similar projects.
I would use a good semigloss latex paint. Many of the current name brands are low odor and dry fairly quickly. Toxicity in today's paint products is not a concern.
