I replacing a number of 10"x3/4" beveled cedar siding on my house, but I am unsure how to butt the ends of the boards together. I have heard three different ways of doing it:
1. Butt the ends together to form a tight joint that does not need to be caulked.
2. Leave an 1/8" gap between the ends of the boards and caulk.
3. Miter the ends the boards at 45 degree and overlap them.
Which is correct!

Might want to take a look at any joints on the existing siding. I've seen it done on shows like this old house and others and saw all three. The last time I saw it on TOH, they were using a tight butt joint and caulk.
