I seem to have a very perplexing problem with two doors in my bedroom. After tearing down the drywall and finding plaster and lathe walls underneath(bad enough), my closet and bathroom doors are the real problem. The rough opening on both doors is 28"x75". Do you see what I'm getting to? All the prehung doors at Lowe's are 80" tall. Do I have any options other than cutting out the plaster and lathe and the 2x4 framing? I really don't want to do that. Does anyone have any ideas that a sort of handyman can handle? Or have I bitten off more sawdust than I can chew? Thanks

If you went with solid wood doors, 5" trimmed off the top and bottom (1/2" off the narrower top and the rest off the bottom) would not be noticeable. Something similar can be done with hollow core wood doors - take the top and/or bottom fill piece out, trim and reinstall the fill piece(s).
That would actually be less work than rebuilding the door frames, however, anyone over 6' is going to feel uncomfortable and if you want to use a vinyl door this may be your only choice.

Hello, If you go with hollow core doors take your cut off the top. There is a block for the lock set and if you cut the bottom you will lower the block and have nothing at the proper height to secure your lock to. Good Luck Woodbutcher
