I looked into this and asked around for you:

I collect old tools and don't have any "modern" pipe wrenches at home - BUT in addition to having a couple of plumbers as members, my volunteer fire department has both the common drop forged steel and the aluminum type you've inquired about.

The aluminum pipe wrenches we carry on the fire truck and on the rescue unit weigh far less than the steel ones. Our new huge 6 inch RIGID aluminum feels (my guesstimate) like it's only about 9-10 lbs, which is much, MUCH less than the steel one. I have not used one yet, but the other firefighters say they're just fine.

The plumbers on the volunteer fire department say the aluminum ones they use for work are great. One works as a fitter for the gas utility and uses his aluminum wrenches several times every day and likes them. The other plumber is self employed and says he uses his far less but says that he likes the aluminum when he works overhead on sprinklers and gas lines.

I have been banging on the end of my 18" aluminum pipe wrench with a sledge hammer to open stuck cleanout caps for almost 10 years. I think they are fabulous!
