I'm helping a friend with a bathroom remodel. His bathroom fan today just vents into the attic.
In the attic, there is a hole in the roof for I assume the purpose of ventilation. It is not a ridge vent, but is a 4X4 or 5X5 square, maybe halfway between the ridge and the edge of the roof. It has some type of metal cap on the outside, but air can circulate through the cap on all 4 sides.
Let's assume we are not going to cut any new holes in the roof or side of house to vent.
Can we vent the bath fan through this hole? I realize I would lose whatever value is being added by this attic vent today, but wouldn't this be better than venting dirct to the attic?

Yes.
You should not dump warm, moist air into an attic.
