I have a nursery set, crib, changing table etc. that were hand me downs. They are a light oak and I would like to paint them and stress them. I would like advise as to how to do this safetly as I will be using it for my daughter that is almost ready to be moved from teh bassinet to the crib.

The best (safest) finish is shellac. Once it dries it is edible and absolutely non-toxic for any age, including babes in arms.

However, since you want to paint/distress the pieces, have a look here:

Todays paints are safe to use. I would suggest a semigloss latex paint for the final coat.
