I am remodeling a 3/4 bath in my home. After doing all the necessary repairs to the sub floor and installing a new drain I had it hot mopped yesterday. Which route is the better way to go? Hardi backer, cement board (wonder board) or float it? Secondly I was told not to nail anywhere on the sides of the shower pan below the lever of the dam (step). How am I to attack the tile boards or lathe? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Chris

myneckbred,

I have rearely heard of anyone hot mopping since rubber liners for shower pans are so much easier to work with.

When it comes to which product, either is acceptable and proper. The issues of not nailing close to the pan lip is to insure the least effect of water infiltration that could cause damage. My tile guy advises me that no nailing of the backer board within 4 to 6 inches of the top lip of the pan. Since the backer is so rigid, tile applications will not be effected by this even though you may worry. Trust me...no one has ever had a leak doing it this way.

Below is a site for tile and backer installations.

Good Luck!
