What's the best way to remove foam-backed kitchen carpet. It's probably been down for 30 years and is glued to the linoleum beneath. I'd like to leave the linoleum and tile over it.

What type of tile are you planning to put "over" the sheet vinyl underneath? Peel & stick? Ceramic?

Either of those and the sheet vinyl needs to come up too to have a suitable substrate to start with.

If you must???

Depending on what type of tile you plan on installing will determine your next step. Self-adhesive vinyl tile requires a smooth surface. A plywood underlayment would provide you with a professional installation. For ceramic tile, concrete underlayment board is recommended. Any movement in subfloor will result in cracked grout and possibly cracked tiles if using ceramic.
