My husband and I have purchased new doors for the interior of our home. I like the look of wood finishes, but my husband claims that the pine doors will not hold stain well. Is he right? If not, can you recommend some stains for this type of door?

Many door manufacturers use radiata pine in their pine doors. This is a cousin of yellow pine, with a finer grain and less pronounced variation in
color when stained.

Radiat pine is a 'farm grown' tree, with thousands of acres devoted to its growth in both New Zealand and various countries in South America.

It takes a stain well, with a pleasing appearance. There's enough grain to give a variation of color without the wide range of color found in other woods with a more dominant grain, such as yellow pine and oak.

McCloskey, Zar, Carver Tripp and Minwax are all stains I can suggest - just find the color you like. I would further suggest a gel-type stain, whatever the mfg. It's easier to control and results in a more uniform color.

A wood conditioner before staining wouldn't be a bad idea, either.
