Hi,
I have an old set that needs I want to refinishe. Right now it is the typical boring brown satin finish. I want to paint it white then white wash but do I need to strip it first of the old varnish? I am hoping I can just paint with a primer then white wash. Is it ok do do this? There are three large pieces to the set.
Thanks:o

Sanding is a must - stripping is not necessary. You need to sand thoroughly and completely - not to take the old finish off, but to scuff it up enough for a new finish to adhere to.

Look at your local home center in the paint department for stains. Many mfgs., including Minwax, make staines that can be applied over existing finishes and give a whitewash look.
