new unit

I began to have problems with the my AC in August of 2008. The coils on the inside would freeze about every three hours and when i turned the unit Auto to fan and would unfreeze and could use for another three hours. I really could not afford to have a pro look at the unit so i discovered this by trial and error. Now that it is winter i can use the unit and it is heating the house with no problem. With Summer on it way, i need to begin to find out what could be wrong and how much i will need to save to call a pro out or get advise on something that i can do with instruction.
I know very little about the AC units and have lived in my house for 12 years and only changed the filters. It has seemed over the years that in 100 degree summers that we have in the south that it just did not cool as much as i would haved liked. some rooms would always be alot hotter than others and had to add darken curtain, ceiling fans and floor fans.
I want to get a better understanding of the system before talking to a possible crooked pro that could take all my money.

Chances are if your evaporator is freezing and filters are clean, fan running, your unit is low on gas. If it's a heat pump, it's probably been running your auxiliary heat instead of the heat pump.

If it's low on gas it's usually indicative of a leak and should be repaired and recharged.
The cost of a service call would most likely be less than what you've spent on the aux heat running.

This one of few area it will be wise to call a HVAC contractor to come out and have them to add freon gas in the system.

due you mention it frezze up every few hours that useally tell that is low on freon or other issue with system.

The service call is not too bad depending on what location you are in so here a summary what it will be

X amout USDollars for service call [ the X will depending on location and what the company policy on this one ]

X amout of freon plus check the system for any leak

There are few other items but to be fair with ya I can't foresee what it will be due there is so many thing it can affect the price.

But honestally the total cost to get this system fix is not very ex*****ive.

Merci,Marc
