Question Color Selection for Kitchen Accessories

Trying to get a handle on a selection of colors for our kitchen.

It is not an eat-in kitchen but has a window . The walls are white, cabinets are light pickled oak, counter is a light grey, and appliances are white. The window is over the sink with cabinets on both sides.

Any Ideas???

Grovel.....

PLEASE accept my DEEPEST and most sincere apologies. I have had something of a personal emergency in my marriage that came first, but I am here now!! (better late than never?)

I want to ask some more questions.....What exactly do you mean by colors? Are we re-doing cabinets? just walls? floors and countertops? appliances?

Let me dash of some advice while the kids are sleeping about walls.

If it were me (and these desicions should be based 100% on your likes)...I would paint the walls a nice pale yellow. Oh wait, I did!!

Really, I have a very similar looking kitchen. Corner window, lots of cabinets, white countertops. My cabinets are white, tho.

I like to put light reflecting colors in kitchens. Being a very busy room, I also like to put pastels and very soft colors in them. I try to stray from wallpapers, tho I have had some people very successfully use that method.

I tend to also stay away from blues, and other 'mood dpressing' colors....or bright 'anxiety' colors...a busy room needs a comfort color or design. One of my favorites is chair rail molding with vertical striping above and a solid below. Of course, this works well in any room..but is still something of a rarity in kitchens, which gives it a great fresh look. Another nice move is to paint your ceiling a lighter shade than your wals, especially if you dont have a huge kitchen to enlarge the feeling of the room.

My overall picks for walls in kitchens, pale yellows, light greys, an ice blue, pale greens......something that invokes more of a summery feeling.....

If you needed advice on other objects as I asked above, please post more - would love to be of as much help as possible!!!

Good luck!

Kitchen colors

GwyniChaela's advice is always on target. I usually try to carry the same colors throughout my home, using more of one color than another in each room. Look to your other rooms to see what color(s) you would like to carry into your kitchen. Kitchens can easily be changed by changing the colors of curtains, canisters, pot holders, towels and other accessories. Paint color is also easily changed. Always strive to surround yourself with colors that make you happy.

I just noted that the title here is "Kitchen Accessories"..oops

Did I blowoff on a tangent you didnt want to hear about?

Darn it!!!!

As far as simple accessories go.....(sorry again!!)

I always go for and recommend chrome. It is becoming more and more popular, goes GREAT with everything, and reflects all the other color you use in any room.

Very timeless, and versatile. It can be used in conjunction with Victorian (my house) decor, as well as an uber-modern era home.... also works wonders in a 50's-60's period style home.

It never clashes, never looks tacky, or cheap....you simply cant go wrong!!

Oops and sorry again!! Hope I focused right this time!!

Kitchen Accessories

Chrome can be dramatic and fit with any decor, but at this age and stage of my life, I don't have time to keep anything clean that shows dust or fingerprints. I know the stainless steel appliances are popular, but the forum posts are full of complaints about cleaning problems. I prefer low gloss, low shine products and fabrics and carpets that are not going to make me a slave to cleaning. I am a sucker for earth tones accented with rusts and reds, greens, and dark blues. I also find the yellows, corals, blues and greens an attractive combo, but when I go to the store I always end up with the colors I love. My wardrobe would appear to be quite dreary to most folks. Just about everything is some flavor of green or brown, although I have recently thrown in a little black. When in doubt about colors, I always recommend that you open your closet door for guidance.

Good point Twelvepole!!!

I never think of the cleaning factor.

Since everything around here is always getting scrubbed, it just slipped my mind I guess!!

Oops!

I too tend to dress 'dreary' at times, tho I have some brighter colors around the closet that I do pull out time and again for something different. Tho that means I'm going out - and not to Safeway.
Of course everyone in Washington dresses the same, earth tones, khakis, and black. It's gotta be a 'thing' here. Only kids and out of towner's would wear anything different!!!

So, my closet might not be the best to check.

I also had some accessories I wasnt willing to change...including the thousand dollar drapes in the living room. I found a coordinating paint was cheaper and accomplished the same 'new' effect I was going for!!

LOL...
