I recently purchased a Jensen JHD910. It's a small, heavy duty 12 volt, am-fm stereo designed for job-site vehicles, ATV's and boats. It has provision for external speakers as well as a 1/4' jack for headphones.
For about one month, the radio worked great. Now no sound comes out of the external speakers. Nothing was changed or altered from the time it worked to the time it didn't work other than turning it on and off. The audio is normal when using the headphones. The unit turns on and off normally and all the features work properly except for the sound. The speaker connections are tight and checked for ohm continuity with a digital multi-meter. I am trying to return the product from where I bought it but they think something is wrong with my speakers since the headphones work. I was told the speakers use the same amplifier as the headphones.
My question is how do I use a multi-meter to check the output of the speaker connections from the radio? What value does a properly working radio send through speaker wires? Is it ohms, volts, resistance, amps or some other measurement of electrons through a wire. For the record, the owner's manual says "loading impedance 4 -8 ohms per channel".
I am just trying to determine whether the speakers are obtaining power from the radio. How do I check it with a multi-meter?
