The code does not specify a number, however a good rule of thumb for general-purpose receptacles is 8 for a 15A circuit and 12 for a 20A circuit.

The rule is that no point along the base of the wall can be more than 6' from a receptacle. That generally means you need to have one within 6' of each doorway and then every 12' after that. You measure along the base of the wall and can continue around corners; you cannot measure across doorways, fireplaces, and other such breaks in the wall. Every wall segment 24" or greater needs at least one receptacle.

If your area is on 2008 NEC, you will need an AFCI breaker for any circuits supplying this room.

That's a pretty big room. I'd probably do one 15A circuit for lighting and two 20A circuits for receptacles, possibly three if you have a specific area that will be used for office equipment or home theater.
